I use the 3M type of protoboards to get things started with. RS carries something similar and the wires for it - this is the white plastic thing with "billions and billions :-)" of holes in it mounted on a blue metal plate and a couple of three way binding posts for power and ground. If you can get these from an electronics supply store I would recommend it, the RS one of these that I have got loose pretty quicky, but does still work :-). These things beat the dickens out of "ugly bug" wiring, especially when you are making a lot of changes... Onward!
