But as the current increases, it would eventually reach a point where the local office equipment would think someone has taken a phone off-hook, and it would react accordingly, sending you a dial tone and waiting for you to reach out and touch someone.
Only other problem you could have is a real surprise if you are handling the wires and someone calls -- 88 volts AC 20 Hz would give you a big of a tingle.
