Mike, Yes I have wondered about the same thing. Prior to this, my cholesterol had stayed somewhere between 220 and 190. And, I was totally unconcerned. The low level really surprised me.
I have not noticed any impact on my blood pressure either way. My thinking is that the oil consumption probably satisfied some dietary need and as long as my body decided that good oil/fat was in generous supply, it didn't need to manufacture as much cholesterol. So, since this was a dietary event, and not contrived, I consider it to be my body's natural response and nothing to get too worried about. When I take the 2 tablespoons of the olive oil and follow the minimal aspects of the Shangri-La protocol, I had no trouble losing about 10 pounds. My chaotic life interfered with the regimen and I haven't been disciplined since. The important parts of the protocol is to consume about 240 flavorless calories in between meals twice a day. You must have not consumed anything with flavor for an hour prior or following the oil shot. It doesn't HAVE to be oil. It can be sugar water, another type of oil, or even just regular food eaten while holding your nose so you don't taste it. I like the oil the best because it has a lot of the omega oils in it and fats are digested slowly. I found I had NO trouble resisting carbs during this time. My hunger dropped quite a bit and I ate less at meals because I just wasn't hungry. It kinda worked like magic. The guy who worked this all out says he lost 30 pounds this way, and all he was doing was drinking sugar water in between meals. Later on, he decided that extra light olive oil made more sense. I recommend oil as a better alternative. I'm thinking that to address my blood pressure I actually have to get off my butt more often, and my twice weekly tennis class is not enough on its own. I should also lose a lot of weight, I'm about 50 pounds over what "Dr." Grover (me!) thinks I should weigh. Perhaps some form of chelation such as EDTA might help too. In the meantime, I'm taking my low dose of Toprol XL. I don't necessarily want to live forever, but I really need to take care of myself better to take good care of my sick wife, quadriplegic son, my ADD daughter, and all household chores. It's a lot on my shoulders, and I'm not very good at it, so I just do the best I can one day at a time. Cheers. --- On Sat, 12/12/09, M. G. Devour <[email protected]> wrote: From: M. G. If you talked to Hal Huggins, for instance, he'd tell you it should be around 220 or so to be healthiest. I've heard that, below about 180 or so, you actually experience an increase in the risk of heart attack, I believe. > My triglycerides were also really low at about 80. That's certainly a good number! Are you finding that you're able to resist the temptation of carbohydrates better on that regemin? High carb consumption is usually the immediate cause of high triglycerides. I have never taken statins and never intend to as I believe > them to be harmful and at best merely hide a problem instead of > correcting one. Any effects on that? Thanks, Mike D.
