Here is a quick temporary fix if you are out in the field and have a ways to travel back home. I learned this in an industrial first aid class. You need a strip of sturdy cloth like a six inch wide strip torn from a towel and folded down the center lengthwise. Center it under your arch just in front of the heel of your shoe, Bring both ends up behind the heel of your foot and cross them just above the heel and bring them around the sides just under the ankles and cross them again just over your instep. Now take the very ends, one on the inside of your foot and the other on the outside, and tuck them under the diagonal portion between your shoe and where they come up from your arch to the back or your heel, bring the ends up to your instep again, pull very firmly and tie across your instep. Even a person without a sprain can feel how much stronger their ankle feels. This is the best I can explain it without actually showing you. It really makes a sprained ankle feel better.
