<Oops, am I showing my age or what?>

Lol--I never thought of it that way.

Once I was at an encampment and it was raining. Most everyone was huddled
under trees, umbrellas, hoodies, sitting around campfires. One guy was
walking by our fire, all hunched over, and said "think the rain will hurt
the asparagus?" and kept walking.

One of the guys in our group said back "not if it's in the can".

The first guy did an actual, honest-to-goodness double take. First time I
ever saw that and I laughed, it was so funny. But he said "you are the very
first person ever to have given me the right answer back. That was my Dad's
favorite saying and I've said it to people ever since he's passed away, and
no one answered me right".

I'd never heard the saying, and the guy in our camp said that he'd always
heard "think the rain will hurt the BEANS".

I find sayings fascinating. They are mostly regional, and time sensitive.
