Daddybob told someone on the Crock Lakhovsky group:
Assuming you are in the US, the 3 major brands here are Klean Strip,
Crown and Sunnyside.
Of these 3, Klean Strip is in a can that seems to have the least problem
with rust, that can having a plastic cap and our spout.

In Australia, Diggers Pure Gum Turpentine.

The method is to take drops of the turpentine on white sugar, enough to
absorb the liquid.
Start small, just a few drops, to minimise die-off discomfort.
Twice a week. You can up the dose as you progress.
Doses in the old days were quite large, but do your research before you
go past 5 ml (1 tsp)

You can research rather more upmarket kinds of turpentine from Canada or
Russia.

Our double-distilled gum turpentine was great but this is vastly
superior cosmetic grade turpentine. It has a clean smell and dissolves
cleanly with no residue ..... We avoided using common steel containers
because gum turpentine reacts with the steel and rusts it. Fresh Gum
Turpentine is used in the manufacture of cosmetics and medicines (it's
used in Vicks to help free respiration). Freshness is important because
Gum Turpentine (or spirits of gum turpentine) is chemically active and
takes up oxygen from the surrounding the air.
...........
This is not Rectified turpentine, which is cooked at high temperatures
with water and chemicals -- some claim that Rectified turpentine is just
a British term for the same product, this is not true. The pine sap is
mixed with water and a caustic and then distilled. Although that
produces a clear spirits of gum turpentine, it also causes the spirits
of turpentine to hold water. That additional water is why many resin
varnishes grow cloudy. Today, much supposed "gum turpentine" is made in
Third World countries using light woods, that is grinding up stumps,
branches, pine needles and other junk and drawing the essence out with
steam. That is called Wood Turpentine. Steam distilling results in that
smelly stuff that also contains water. Real turpentine is made by
patiently drawing off the tree sap. Just imagine what sort of maple
syrup you would get if you boiled up roots, branches and leaves.

Case Reports

Case 1. A 55-year-old man who had completed 11 years of education
reported using turpentine during the year preceding the survey to rid
himself of "seed ticks."

What is called Terebene, a most useful medicine for winter cough, is
produced by the action of sulphuric acid on Turpentine. From five to ten
drops may be taken on sugar three or four times in the day, and its
vapour acts by inhalation as a very useful antiseptic sedative in
consumptive disease of the lungs.

02/10/2010 We received another call this week from someone trying to
find "medicinal" turpentine. We have had several such calls since we
added the "Turpentine Story" page to this Web Site. Evidentially in
"googling", our site comes up and they think we might be able to help.
We can't. Usually John suggests hunting for a small, very old-looking,
individually-owned pharmacy -- one that looks like it has been there
forever. If it is still the original pharmacist, he might have some of
the "medicinal" turps that has been around for years. Other than that we
don't have any suggestions. If someone knows where to find it, let us
know and we will pass the information on to the next person who calls.

Hippocrates, Dioscoride, Galien used the terpenic oil against lung
diseases and biliary kithiasis. Thilenius, Pitcairn, Recamier and
Martinet recommended it against the blennorrhoea and cystitis.
Chaumeton et al prescribed it against neuralgias. It was also used in
the treatment of rheumatism, sciatica, nephritis, drop, constipation and
mercury salivation.

A spoonful of turpentine, mixed with camphor oil, was believed to cure
tapeworm. A clean rag lightly soaked with turpentine would heal any cut,
scrape, or scratch.

Anyone know where we can purchase these items? (Particularly
turpentine that’s used for home remedies)?

 Lisa

Tar water used to be a valued remedy. Turpentine also. The pinenes in
the pine oil or sap are effective remedies for many maladies.
 R

When I was 12 the docs put tar all over me, trouble was they did not
know how to get it off, I must say it was extremely painful, they used
gasoline to take the tar off.
