Hi gang, We've had some worried discussions about liability issues lately with the publication of the archives. I didn't expect it, really, but I fully understand where it's from.
This list has provided an environment that is quite sheltered and has fostered a sense of community. Plus, the clearly stated bias of the list is such that debunkers need not apply. Those who would try to disrupt things know that they'll be dealt with, and mostly seem not to try. This has given us an illusion of privacy and safety that really isn't there in any real sense. So we've suddenly realized that we're more vulnerable than we ever though about before. I wouldn't know if we've been monitored by any government or agency, but it wouldn't surprise me if at least one professional "anti" is listening, looking for opportunities to do harm to the cause, or at least waiting for us to get far enough out of line to be vulnerable. That's the nature of the internet. Probably 90 percent of our subscribers have never posted, so who knows who they might be? I've been politically active for several years, now, and my views have been widely published on newsgroups and large mailing lists. I'm on the board of a local activist organization and an active participant in local Libertarian politics. Guess what? If I'm not on *all* their lists already, then they haven't been doing their jobs! <GRIN> The fact is that I am free to state my views and I will continue to do so. I've developed a knack for qualifying my opinions so I don't say anything obviously stupid, threatening, or illegal, but I've long ago given up on holding back for the sake of anonymity. And my conscience and principles are what ultimately guide my choices. I'm here to do what I *ought* to do, for as long as I have the freedom to do it. If the time ever comes that someone tries to stop me from exercising that freedom, I will follow those same sources of guidance. So why do I run this list, answer people's questions, publish archives, or build a web site about it? Because I've heard people tell me how much this stuff has helped them. Folks who aren't selling anything, and some that are. But people who I've come to know and respect. And trust. It's a frightening discovery to realize that the "system" is hostile towards something that is important to you. This is something that each of us will have to face if we're ever to do anything to change it or to help more than a few close friends and loved ones. I don't know what decisions you who are reading this will make, but I know mine. Be well, Mike D.
