He thinks he *should* quit but doesn't really want to.

Quitting is no more unpleasant nor longer lasting than a case of the flu.
The toxins clear themselves out in 3 to 7 days.
The "addiction" is mostly mental and involves loss of habitual self identity.

The hard part isn't quitting, but the re-identification..almost like dealing with grief over a lost member of your family...your own idea of you.
One that you CAN have back.

It's about "attachments" and control.
If you could control the flu, delay it forever, you probably would rather than let it run its course and be done with it.

If you see it as an enemy, you will be in a battle forever and there will be innocent casualties. There is no worse "tyrant" than an ex smoker blaming others and a "substance" for their burial of self. In AA that would be called a "Dry Drunk" wielding an axe to bust up the bars, controlling every one else in order to deny that they have not changed themselves.
