I bought thefood-grade diatomaceous earth from Major Surplus & Survival, in 
Gardena, California (1 (800) 441-8855.  It is $15 for a 30 gallon barrel.  It 
came with an assay of minerals, and a note that said that the person who did 
the 
assay was taking it by mouth for mineral supplementation.  I'm sure one can get 
it elsewhere also, but the source may be a good place to start.

I've never taken it, so know nothing about die-off.
