If it's an everday El Cheapo laser, try another laser.
I've got a few different lasers {just your ordinary lasers as procurable
anywhere} and found they are not as reliable as I would have expected.
They ALL have one idiosyncracy however - the beam will go from fuzzy to clear
as the pointer is rotated whilst shining through a solution.
Rotate your wrist and see if there is any difference in the clarity of the beam
through the liquid.
I believe 'collimation' is the key word here.
