I was a bookkeeper at an gas/oil heating company. When the boss decided to do something to keep us busier in the spring/summer, he started selling pools and we serviced them. We all got sent to training to learn how to balance pool water. That training school convinced me that I never, ever wanted a pool and I would never, ever swim in just anyone's pool if I didn't know how it was maintained. That being said, a product that I would recommend highly is Baquicil. It's main sanitizer is based on 35% Hydrogen Peroxide. Here is someone's comment about Baquicil. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I have been using Baquacil for 18 years in an in-ground pool. I used chlorine in an above ground pool prior. The cost difference is obvious. Starting off new, Baquacil is very expensive. As the years go on, the cost of the sanitizer drops dramatically because of the baquacil buildup in the water. You dont have the chlorine smell and the eye burning. I recommend washing the baquacil from your hair since the hair tends to get heavy after swimming. Foaming is also a problem with baquacil. I still prefer baquacil and intend to use it after I install a new liner next year." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I tested pool water till my eyes crossed..lol. I don't know about the foaming. That probably depends on water softness, agitation, etc. The only other thing to worry about with Baquacil is if you have copper pipes or any metal in your pool or pool water (iron). (Don't let your kids dive for pennies either.) The Baquacil will exhaust itself trying to neutralize any metals in the pool water. Baquacil is very kind to pool liners, swim suits, hair & eyes. The other best thing about this product is that it kills all bacteria and germs 24/7, never chemically 'binds' up requiring 'shocking' like chlorine does and, once the level of Baquacil is at the upper optimal range, you don't need to add more for two - three weeks. The levels gradually decline whereas with chlorine, it must be added to and monitered daily.
Baquacil's germ killing prowess, unlike chlorine, is unaffected by sunlight or agitation. It is also easier to keep your water ph balanced. I used to tell people that nothing in their lives has ever prepared them to take care of a pool..LOL.. The people who had the best luck maintaining their pools at the least cost were the ones who kept the 'junk' (leaves, bugs etc) out of their pools daily and who ran their filters most of the time and kept the filters clean (new sand or DE as needed). I have heard that some people use ozone as a pool sanitizer but I never ran across one of those here in Va. You would still have to keep your water ph balanced.
