Kirsteen, of course it is a myth! You can't drop food on the floor and expect it to remain sterile. The place I have seen it used is while taking a rack of sterilized beakers from a hot autoclave. One fell on the floor. The professor said "10-second rule" and picked it up and put it back in the rack. I would have put it back with the unsterilized beakers instead. why take chances?
