Yes! That wonderful book "Aboriginal Men of High Degree" writes that they
carried obsidian which is found all over the ground in parts of central
Australia - as well as quartz crystal - / black and white. Is magnatite the
same as haematite?

I think the apache tear works because it has come through the fire of
the ancient volcano and melted the matrix(?) or quartz, well it is
glass after all) and it has somehow trapped the ormus element into it.
If anyone accepts that there is something called ormus than that's as
good a theory as any I have ever heard.
The magnatite might be present in the apache tear as well as the
denser from of obsidian.
Do we have any geologists here on this group?
