Great Tip!

I have been in IT for 26 years and manage several websites and I also can
recommend http://ixquick.com or the (English only), Google enhanced version
at http://startpage.com .

There is no fee and all you have to do is go to it and use it. It is free.
They make money by serving a few ads... but do not collect information about
you or your searches.

They act as a proxy server, (passing along your search request to the search
engine and then collecting the results and passing that to you, kind of like
an anonymous go-between), showing the search engines their ip address and
search history which isolates you and your history from the search engine's
server logs.

Your computer's internet connection has an IP address that is unique in the
world and this is the address that is being tracked by the search engines.
They watch what you search for and then serve you advertisements based on
your search history. If you have the Google toolbar installed, (or many
others), they record EVERY WEBSITE YOU VISIT and serve you ads based on
that. The worrisome thing is that they keep compiling this information on
you and eventually they know your interests and more about you than you
would be comfortable with.

Many "free" toolbars are in fact, spying on you to gather information about
your surfing habits so they can make money trying to sell you things they
think you would be interested in buying.

For example, I used the Google toolbar and because I access my web server
remotely every day, I was getting ads constantly for web hosting services on
the right side of my search results page.

Ixquick still serves a few ads, but does not save your searches or your ip
address.

It is a great tool and I also highly recommend it.
