Normally when two substances react with each other they neutralize     each 
other.  For instance if you put vinegar into baking soda, they     react, and 
the vinegar neutralizes the baking soda, and the baking     soda neutralizes 
the 
vinegar.  There can be exceptions when dealing     with enzymes and catalysts 
though.
