If properly made, most is absorbed into the blood in the stomach. If any makes it into the colon, it is immobilized and thus pretty well ineffective. That is of course good, since if it were killing your flora in the colon, that would be bad. Only if the contents are liquid does it still have significant power in the colon, and in that case you need it.
