First recent evidence is that petroleum is not from plants and animals,
but rather methane is outgassed from the center of the earth, and some
is trapped as natural gas. Under heat and pressure it over long periods
of time becomes petroleum. There is not complete agreement, and some
geologists do still think it is from plants and animals though.
Petroleum is made up of lots of hydrocarbons from very short to very
long chains and also a number of cyclic compounds. Some of the
compounds are very toxic, such as benzene and ether, others are
completely inert, such as petroleum jelly and mineral oil.

Ummm, petroleum is made from plants and animals by the geologic
processes of the earth, and thus is as natural as any refined
vegetable oil.
