I think my wife did mix it in water, when she was taking it. Of course I don't know why one couldn't just sprinkle a small amount on their food. That what I do with my animal feed, just sprinkle some in their food.
*** Make sure you get "food" grade and not pool grade. Totally different stuff. Food grade DE for life forms. Pool grade DE for (well) pools.
