Very slight variation in the process can affect the final product significantly
for the LVDC method. First of all it the purity of the distilled water. The
conductivity of purchased distilled water varies considerably between different
suppliers, and from one batch to another from the same supplier. When you find
a batch that works well you may want to go out and buy 10 gallons or so of the
same batch number to get rid of this variable.

Temperature has a big effect on conductivity. Even a few degrees difference can
make the water have twice or half the conductivity. Always try and use water at
the same temperature every time.

Absorption of gases, most notibly carbon dioxide can make a big difference in
the initial conductivity. After opening a bottle of distilled water, cap
tightly as quickly as possible. Boiling can eliminate the absorbed gases, but
can introduce salts from any contamination of the container, or dissolving of
the metal of the pot. Also it must be cooled completely before use to a
consistant temperature, and when you do that, it can reabsorb carbon dioxide.

Containers can have a trace of a compound or salt on them. It could be a little
detergent from washing them, minerals from the water they were washed in, or
salt from a person's hands that handled it. Very small amounts of a salt, acid
or alkaline substance can make a significant difference in the conductivity of
the water.

Spacing of the electrodes can make a difference, as well as if you stir or
disturb the water during making it. You will likely find that stiring is of
benefit when the silver ribbon first reaches the cathode, but for consistant
results it needs to be done consistantly between batches.

It has been reported that phases of the moon have an effect. I don't know.
