Cola, root beer and any other soda containing phosphoric acid will leach magnesium from your body. Magnesium is necessary for the body's use of calcium to build and maintain teeth and bones. Thus, cola can cause tooth decay, arthritis, osteoporosis and a host of neuromuscular disorders stemming from the calcium shortage and the constant battle between soft and hard tissues for the inadequate supply.
I learned this years ago and have since seen it verified by a wide variety of sources, both mainstream and sidestream. A recent study showed active teenage girls who drank cola had a much higher rate of bone fractures than similar girls who drank no cola. The cola industry said there's no science behind it (translation: you ain't got nuthin' on me, copper, and you can't make me talk.).
