James, Ivan, et al,
        Correct me if I'm wrong (HA! Fat chance of that not
happening!), but if you are speaking of particles of silver
consisting of "normal" atoms of silver then there will be no net
charge on these particles.  The number of protons and electrons are
equal and the charges cancel out.  
        Ions are easy to define...they consist of atoms that have
either lost or gained electrons and the charge is directly related
to the difference between the number of protons and electrons.  In
the case of an ion of silver that charge is expressed as Ag[+] or a
net charge of +1.
