Hi Mike, I think the term has different meanings in different fields.
Uncertain, but probably in electrolysis, it is allowing the arc to leap a short distance into the water, or the electrode just touching the surface of the water. In Marx's HV process, one electrode plate is mostly submerged and is connected to one side of the 115 V line. On either side of it are two "arc bars' dangling electrodes connected to the other side of the line. The electrodes are adjusted to just above the water. When the current is applied, two cones of water rise up the arc bars about 1/4 -3/8 inch. As the process heats up some water is evaporated and condenses on the lid and sides of the vessel, lowering the water level. As the sol becomes more conductive, the cone lowers. It may lower enough for the arc to "sputter" between its tip and the water surface for the remaining portion of the run. Roger I am acquainted with "sputtering" in terms of vacuum based processes used in electronics and industry for coatings and creating layered structures with thin films. I understand you're doing ambient pressure sputtering at least for part of your process. My use of "sputtering" here, which may not be perfect, is to describe the process where incident electrons impart kinetic energy to the silver metal lattice, causing, or at least contributing to, the release of silver atoms into the sol. Can the electrolysis of a metal in water be accurately described as a sputtering process, in whole or in part? I don't know. I'm willing to be educated. <grin> Be well, Mike D.
