> "Oh please, don't start down this road! It leads to trouble."
> ... lets ... return to the good humored banter we are famous for! Indeed. Please. Once in a while, friends, things go wrong and somebody gets hurt. This is one of those times. Devnull has unsubscribed from the list for, I believe, several related reasons: He was deeply offended by the comments about Apollo mission fraud theories, having, he said, a lifelong interest in the space program. He saw fit to remark on Bob Squires' thanks and praise posting, as a way of further revealing his irritation with us, I think. In messages to me, however, perhaps his real complaints and reasons showed through... He unsubscribed because, in his words, "Its not worth getting 40-200 mails from the list everyday and only 5-10% with good info about cs." He also mentioned, in another private e-mail, that he has "enough problems right now." So I want to use this case to point out the reasons for why the list is the way it is... We need to balance our pleasure in sharing, humor, and friendship, with the understanding that people who come here looking for help often face *serious* burdens in their lives. We avoid *significant* intrusion of religion into the discussion, not because the bulk of us aren't religious, one way or another, but because we *know* a civil discussion on the subject is impossible in *any* public forum, let alone this one. I expect vendors to conduct their business and promotional activities in private e-mail. Your public contributions must be as individuals, helping people, and respectful of the contributions of others. If there's any doubt, clear it with me in advance. And, we have to resist the unrelenting temptation to share our political views, pet theories, or philosophy when they have no relevence to the topics of the list. It is seldom worth the loss of harmony and credibility to hash out controversies that are irrelevent to our topic. You never know when somebody's hot button's going to get jabbed, *and* you never know who is going to leave, quietly, unhelped, convinced we're fools. Now, I know we are not fools. CS is just *one* example of truth found in cyberspace that is surpressed in the dominant media and concealed from the unknowing masses. But for the new folks who we most need to reach, there's a good chance that the other stuff is not only irrelevant, but will make them less receptive to us. I won't change the way I run the list because one person couldn't fit in comfortably. Certainly is *is* comfortable here for most of us. But I ask you to learn and be mindful of the influence your words have on others.
