Hi Connie; A model train transformer is AC and most CS is made with DC. It would be simpler to start witha Radio Shack wall mounted transformer that outputs 30 volts DC. The part number is 273-1668 and costs $21.99. With this and a meter and silver wire you wold have the simplest system that is expandable to something more elegant.
With you train transformer you would have to make an AC to DC converter, and as you say "technically challenged" this would be frustrating.
