I do know they are used quite frequently in cases where limbs or fingers have been separated in injuries and then surgically re-attached. They are placed onto the finger tips of the re-attached finger and continually bring new blood to the finger-tips. The new fresh blood quite often is not there right away otherwise due to the trauma of the injury and the surgical proceedure itself sometimes.
