SUMMARY: DON'T CLICK THE TEXT FILE IN "CS>Unidentified subject"
I was reading the list on a laptop which doesn't have a virus scanner (I
know, shame on me...) Microsoft in their finite wisdom doesn't display full
file names for certain types of files. So, that web link on your desktop
actually is stored with .url at the end, which by default isn't displayed.
This occurs with several different types of files, including .vbs (Visual
Basic script), .pif and .url. So, a file named xyz.txt.pif will appear as a
text file, but act as a pif file, unbeknownst to a user because the .pif
final extension is not displayed. I had disabled this hidden display on the
laptop I'm using, so the attachment in Silvia Jauchler's email appeared on
my system as "NEW_NAPSTER_site.TXT.PIF" instead of "NEW_NAPSTER_site.TXT"
as it would on an un modified Windows system. A further quick look at the
attachment reveals it's executable and contains a bunch of profane file
names and the following text strings:
Software provide by [MATRiX] VX team:
Ultras, Mort, Nbk, LOrd DArk, Del_Armg0, Anaktos
Greetz:
All VX guy on #virus channel and Vecna
Visit us: www..{snip}
which would raise further suspicions it is some sort of virus.
Mike Devour, as CS list maintainer, could you delete this CS list email
(Subject: CS>Unidentified subject!, Sent: Monday, October 09, 2000 2:12 AM)
from the list to save anyone further problems.
Someone with an up to date virus scanner should scan the file and identify
the virus contained within and advise the list.
Unfortunately, I won't be in a position to do that until tomorrow.
