 * Alternative cures 'could be dangerous'

Herbal medicines used to treat asthma are largely unproven and may
even be dangerous if taken with other drugs, according to researchers.
A study into complementary medicines concluded that there was an
"urgent need" for proper clinical trials into the effectiveness of
"natural" cures taken by thousands of people. The research, in the
British Medical Association's journal Thorax, reviewed 17 clinical
trials for herbal asthma treatments. Six dealt with traditional
Chinese therapies such as concentrated ginkgo leaf liquor and eight
with Indian Ayurvedic medicines. The others looked at a Japanese Kampo
medicine, ivy leaf extract and marijuana. The researchers, from Exeter
University, found that most of the trials were of poor quality. Among
those which showed herbal medicines had benefits, the flaws in the
studies cast doubt on the findings. Only nine of the trials were
double blind, where neither the participant nor the investigator knew
whether the patient was being given a herbal treatment or a placebo.
