* NHS predicts 'serious pressure' A BBC survey has revealed that health authorities expect to face the same or even greater pressures this winter than they did last year - though most expect to cope better. Last year large swathes of the health service were thrown into chaos as flu victims clogged wards and forced the cancellation of routine operations. Most authorities expect the story to be repeated in the coming months. But 72 of 81 that responded said they were either very or fairly confident they had either the staff or resources to cope this winter. Cancellation of routine surgery was part of many authorities' winter plans - 43 said they planned to make cancellations, or had already made sure that routine work was not scheduled at that time. But most did not anticipate either increased waiting lists or times for patients, or either a bed or staff shortage. The government has invested heavily to avoid a repeat of the scenes in hospitals in last December and January. Back to work bottling CS and preparing like a good scout! Regards, Robert Bartell
