Hello!

I had a brief e-mail coresspondence with Dr. Barrett about a year ago
after I accessed his "QuackBusters" site. As far as I can determine, the
man has no nutritional knowledge whatsoever (the average doctor has a
whopping total of 20 - 40 hours of nutritional "instruction" in medical
school; that teaches such wonderful knowledge as a well balanced diet
gives you all the vitamins and minerals you need. For a normal doctor,
that is the sum total of their nutritional knowledge. For more than
that, a doctor has to read material all on their own).

I, myself, have read hundreds of books on nutrition. My best guess is
that over the last 29 years I have spent several thousand hours reading
about nutritional topics. (I first started reading nutritional books
when I was 16).

His attitude is that God-like doctors such as himself, should decide for
all of us which and what quantity of nutrients we should be allowed to
get, preferably by prescription, to prevent ignorant people like us from
harming ourselves.

The fact that according to the US Surgeion General's website, that
nutritional substances caused NO deaths, but that LEGAL prescription
medicines, properly used, cause about 100,000 deaths in the US alone
each year (if you add in mis-prescribed, mis-used, and mis-administered
legal prescription drugs, the number of deaths DOUBLES); does not seem
to disuade him from trying to "protect" us from "dangerous" nutritional
substances. Legal prescription drugs are about the 4th leading cause of
death in this country. It seems to me that a much more productive use of
his time would be to have dangerous legal prescription drugs better
controlled.

For HIMSELF, however, it's OK to take mega-doses of what he thinks he
needs. He takes 3 grams of niacian a day, without having liver function
tests done. (A safe upper limit without tests is around a gram a day).

My only consolation in all of this is that he is old, and hopefully will
not be around much longer to "protect" us all from ourselves.

As to MSM, being new to the list, perhaps I missed it. Why don't you
just use tablets (which is the way I take it), instead of having to
combat the horrid taste from mixing the powder in water?

Thanks to all.
