Another tidbit in from England:

HEALTH

* 5,000 die from hospital bugs

Five thousand patients die every year from infections picked up in
hospitals in a scandal that is costing the NHS an annual £1 billion.

The scale of the threat lurking on the wards was revealed as appalled
MPs on a Parliamentary spending watchdog demanded that the service
"get a grip" on the crisis.

An estimated 100,000 hospital patients - one in ten - fall victim to
infections every year, mostly from drug-resistant "superbugs".
