Usually, the large black ants we get in temperate North America are nectar eaters, although the form THAT takes is often considered very weird. They are known to "farm" aphids & squeeze the aphids' waste (honeydew/nectar) for food. They keep predators away from the plant/tree that "their" aphids inhabit & will just go away if the aphids are eradicated. I did an "Integrated Pest Management" project/thesis to qualify for my pesticide applicator's license here in Washington State, with the "integrated" part being totally organic. In a known ant infestation, I checked the (spruce) tree outside the home & sure enough, the entire tree was infested with aphids. I obtained 2 packets of Lady Beetles (they bred like crazy in the packets, so I subsequently lucked out & had thousands of larvae too, which are known as "aphid lions" for VERY good reason. At dusk I soaked the ground at the base of the tree & hosed a few million aphids out of the tree, onto the ground (for Lady Beetle food, to let them know prey was plentiful). When it was dark, I spread the packets of beetles & larvae at the base of the tree (they fly upward toward sunlight...I didn't want them to leave before they did the job)and in less than a week, there no ants to be found. They were not killed directly by the Lady Beetles, but I'm certain they starved quickly once the aphid food source was eliminated. I got the beetles at my local garden supply in mid-spring. The beetles moved on in about 3 weeks, looking for greener "pastures".
