Having been a tanker driver for a few years... The independents buy their gasoline off the major producers pipelines so, if you boycott Exxon stations and go to an independent station, you are likely still supporting Exxon...if not them, another. The independents buy from whoever is selling cheapest that day or by contract. They do not produce the fuel.
If you're like me, I buy from whoever is cheapest and that keeps everyones demand about even. That's why the prices don't vary much. The only way to drive prices down is to reduce gasoline usage altogether.
