I've completed a detailed scan of my machine and re-booted. There is 
no sign of infection here from just viewing the messages on the web 
page in the archive with MS Internet Explorer.

If you, Ivan, or anyone can confirm an infection from that source, 
please let me know. It's conceivable that someone could re-activate the 
virus code by cutting and pasting the message text into a new e-mail 
and sending it to someone, or by forwarding the page in some way. I 
don't know if there are other ways it could cause problems...

In the meantime, I will see if e-scribe is willing to e-scrub the
archive to remove the offending fragments!
