List: After 691 hrs, or almost 1 month after immersing various grades of 20
ga. silver wire in sealed 1 oz. plastic bottles containing ~ 1oz. of DW, I
have found that silver and Stirling silver (92.5%Ag/7.5%Cu) do not appear to
dissolve significantly in DW. The 75%Ag/22%Cu/3%Zn alloy showed an XS
conductivity of 0.3 ms which is borderline XS above the DW control
conductivity. The 70%Ag/20%Cu/10%Zn alloy showed an XS conductivity of 4.1 ms
(1.3 ms after 90.5 hrs), about 258% above control conductivity. The
65%Ag/20%Cu/15%Zn alloy showed an XS conductivity of 5.7 ms (2.3 ms after
90.5 hrs), about 219% above control conductivity. The 56%Ag/22%Cu/17%Zn/5%Sn
alloy showed an XS conductivity of 1.5 ms (0.7 ms after 90.5 hrs), about 119%
above control conductivity. There is little doubt that the XS conductivities
I'm reporting are due to metallic dissolution, and are not anomalous
conductivity readings, or conductivities due to the presence of additional
CO2 since I'm using the same plastic container (handled the same, and filled
to the same level) as a DW control.

So the trend observed at the 230 hr. mark continues unabated. Despite its low
level, the tin continues to appear to passivate somewhat the 56% Ag alloy
surface. Anyone out there know the difference between Sterling silver and
silver coinage metal? It may be that IF silver coinage metal has other metals
that make up the 7.5% "balance," a greater dissolution in water may occur due
to the presence of various type of corrosion cells.

I now plan to send these samples to Frank Key who graciously volunteered to
analyze them by AA for silver to confirm the tentative conclusions I've made
from the conductivity values alone. As soon as Frank has completed these
determinations, I'll report the final results. Roger
