You can also use a dremel and sanding disk to sand the nail down to very
thin.  It doesn't hurt if you keep the speed down.
 I wonder if there is some sort of enzyme or solvant to dissolve the nail
right down to the flesh interface? If that interface is intact, the nail
will grow back just fine.

 No need for the towel.  properly made CS isn't all that sensitive to light.
