Don't think it will disolve the nail right down to the "flesh interface" but about 30 years ago I used to use "Neet" or "Nair" to remove hair from my legs. I applied the cream with my hand and so it got onto my fingernails... well it made the nails VERY soft and seemed to eat away at them too.

  You can also use a dremel and sanding disk to sand the nail down to very
thin.  It doesn't hurt if you keep the speed down.
 I wonder if there is some sort of enzyme or solvant to dissolve the nail
right down to the flesh interface?
