Hi Marshalee,

You're quite right about the increase in diabetes among cats and dogs (I haven't read Chuck's posts yet). I feed my two cats a raw meat diet that is approx 85% meat 15% veggies (no grain). Of course, it's of utmost importance to know how to balance the meat to bone ratio (phosphorus:calcium) but this is fairly easily learned. I have read several stories on my e-lists about animals overcoming their diabetes, or needing far less insulin, when switched to a raw, grain-free diet.

If you're not interested in doing the home prep thing, then an alternative would be canned food, as it usually has less grain. Two fairly good brands are Wysong and Solid Gold (there are others).

Adding vegetable derived ENZYMES is always appropriate when feeding any cooked food (canned or kibble) as cooking kills them, and enzymes are majorly important!. And to keep your canine friend happy, why not toss them a nice RAW chicken neck each day, it helps clean their teeth and it's Phos/Cal ratio is perfect for a dog :-)

All the best,
Eleanor

I just checked the label
on the bag of food I feed my beloved Pug dogs. It is called Precise brand.
The second, third, and fourth ingredients are grains!!! No wonder so many
animals are developing diabetes. Wow!
(Anyone know of a totally meat dog food? Or at least one without grain?)

Marshalee
