Dear Teri,
We have no experience with in vivo studies of the effects of CS
on bordetella organisms. However, we have...on several occasions....
demonstrated the effectiveness of CS on pertussis-----in vitro.
I am confident properly generated CS of 5 to 10 ppm strength
would provide effective control of all of the organisms in the bordetella
group. The immediate challenge becomes furnishing an effective methodology
for bringing the CS into proper contact with the pathogen. I would suggest
you consider the provision of no fluids other than CS.....at the referenced
strengths (provided pups still willingly drink). Otherwise, the only choice
is the use of a stomach tube. Stomach tubes should be used ONLY by
knowledgeable/experienced persons. Unkilled persons can, easily, drown an
animal through the inadvertant introduction of liquids into the lungs via
improper placement of the tube. The procedure itself is quite simple, and
safe......if implemented by a skilled practitioner.
As an adjunctive support, an effective nebulization system
would, most probably, measurably
enhance the degree of favorable response. Even limited introduction of CS
into the lung tissues would offer worthwhile support.
Using a system similar to the Airbrush unit one of our
technicians developed several years ago, it would be possible to administer
an individual protocol to each separate puppy. The technique would require
the administrator to observe...then synchronize....each discharge with the
inhalation portion of the breath cycle. This is considerably easier than
one might , at first, believe. This procedure is not overly intrusive and
would not furnish reactive bases for any of the conventional treatments now
in vogue.
In any event, it would appear such a protocol might
offer superior results to those afforded by current---more conventional
approaches.
                    Sincerely, Brooks Bradley.
