The higher purity forms of gold and silver are very expensive. For example, .99999 fine (5 nines) silver is priced about $250 per ounce. A far cry from the $5/ounce for .999 fine. A similar price point (several thousand $/ounce) exists for .99999 gold. These extremely high purity metals are primarily used in laboratory experiments. I'm really surprised that 4-nines (.9999 fine) gold or silver was ever issued as a coin. They would be almost double the price of .999 fine coins. Electronics can easily use .99 fine gold, especially as much of the electronics use is metal plating, which will automatically increase the purity of the plated material. -- Dean -- from (almost) Des Moines -- KB0ZDF -- The silver-list is a moderated forum for discussion of colloidal silver.
