The first clinical trial involving coconut oil and monolaurin has been completed in the Philippines. Preliminary results on the small trial indicate that greater than 50 per cent of the patients had a reduced viral load and that one third of the patients had a favourable increase in their CD4/CD8 ratios. The study also indicated that the patients using coconut oil fared better than those just on monolaurin supplements. Lauric acid converts into monolaurin in the small intestines. Dr. Enig has concluded that immune-compromised individuals should ingest about 25 grams of lauric acid per day. This amounts to 4 tbsp of coconut oil a day. Or, one could drink 12 ounces of canned coconut milk and also get about 25 grams of lauric acid. In addition to being rich in lauric acid, coconuts contain about 6% capric acid which has also demonstrated significant activity against Herpes simplex-2, chlamydia, and HIV-1. Also coconut oil and coconut milk are alot cheaper & tastier than those suppliments!
