You know, a high efficiency led can be purchased from Radio Shack, and when you put it in series with an electrode, it can easily give a rough indication of current, and make it easy to tell when the batteries get weak. Just be sure to put a limiting resistor in series so if you accidently bump the electrodes together you don't burn out the led.
