A thread is any group of messages that all have the same Subject. If you look at this message, it's part of the "Gentle reminder from the list owner..." thread. Now, if somebody is several days behind reading their e-mail, and they respond to one of the messages in this thread, say, next week some time when they're trying to catch up, it could create some unintended consequences. At the very least, they might be saying something that several other people have already said, and wasting an extra message that people will have to read and delete. At worst, they might be resurrecting an old argument and upsetting a delicately negotiated truce that was worked out in the days since. It could *really* screw up the moderator's day, that! <grin> If, after you've got caught up, nobody has answered a question or your comment is still helpful, then it's okay to respond. Often you'll find that you can dump your reply unsent because other people have already covered what you have to say. I usually minimize the messages I'm thinking of replying to at the bottom of my screen until I've read everything. Then I go back and write my replies, aware of everything that's gone before. It's not a hard and fast rule, clearly, but is something to keep in mind. Hope that explains things. Thank you for asking, Esther. Be well, Mike D.
