It takes a very good power supply to equal the quality of DC produced by batteries.
By "more consistent", I suppose you mean, Uniform, smooth, NO ripple, and a level voltage.
Radio shack sells some small books for about $ 2.00 that will explain simple power supplies. You can't expect to gain a full understanding of this technology in only a few minutes.
A few hours would be a better investment. And.... if you really want to know about it, buy one of the "Experimenter Kits".
The "200 in ONE" is a good investments, and will take you to First base, and half way to second base in this field of study.
