Oops! I am afraid I misled you folk as to the measurement of silver by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. Bob was right in the first instance in that particles less than about 5 microns do not need acid digestion in order to vaporise in the machines flame, and so AAS will measure TOTAL content of CS.
Here is the heads up I received from Frank Key: AA does not require that the silver > particles be digested > with acid if the particles are below about 3-5 microns. No > particles of that > size would stay suspended. The flame will vaporize the > particles and provide > accurate AA results. This is explained in the paper on > silver-colloids.com > titled "Determining Properties of Colloidal Silver". > > A spectrophotometer requires that the particles be digested. > If no digestion, > then only the ions will measured.
