Judy and other newbies, I think Ole Bob is bashing the vendors a bit too much when he says they only offer automatic shutoff. How about constant current control which homebrew folks are pretty challenged to make. Some also use a stirring motor and have variable PPM control and large surface area electrodes to reduce the current density in order to make good CS.
If that isn't a lot better than a home made outfit I don't understand what he's getting at. It's really very difficult for the average person to have to jump through Bob's hoops of learning about digital multimeters and time versus current and the other variables that enter into making good CS. Automation has it's place in most processes and it always works better than the "old way". Same with making CS.
