Greetings, folks!

I've just inspected about a dozen messages that were bounced by the
list server to my list owner account because they were over the 40000
byte size limit. That's how big a message you can send. Anything bigger
is not sent out.

Rather than respond to all of these individually, I would like to
remind you all of this fact. If you've posted something that didn't
come back to you, there's a good chance that's why.

When you *reply* to a large message, be *SURE* you clip as much text
as possible from the original message so that your additional comments
and headers don't tip it over the size limit for you.

It's common for people to forward lengthy articles or essays they've
found on the net or received in mail. This causes every member of the
list to have to download and/or store a lot of text.

It's also common to see a link to some web page and absolutely no
description or explanation of why we might want to read it. Given the
time it takes to load a browser and open the page, many people will
not blindly follow every link somebody throws at them.

The best compromise is to post a link to the original article on the
Web along with a brief description or excerpt to help people decide if
they're interested enough to read it.

Be well,

Mike Devour
