Gut Feelings Cry Out For Waste
Its advocates acknowledge that it is "distasteful", but they say the results
justify its use as a last resort therapy.
Take a deep breath ... it's fecal transfusion.
That is, the introduction of stools from a healthy person into the bowel of
someone with anything from diarrhoea to flatulence.
It is happening in Sydney, and far from being a fringe-dwelling alternative
practice, it is attracting the cautious approval of the mainstream medical
community. A paper on the subject is published this week in a leading US
gastroenterology journal.
The theory is that the complex "zoo" of bacteria that inhabit the gut can be
permanently disrupted, probably by the use of antibiotics, with some subspecies
being killed off.
This can lead to the multiplication of harmful bacteria which release toxins
that cause a multitude of bowel problems.
"We've been using this in patients with constipation and colitis, which says to
us both are linked to an infection," said the director of the Centre for
Digestive Diseases at Five Dock in Sydney, Dr Tom Borody.
"Stool flora is exceedingly complex," Dr Borody said.
"In terms of subspecies of bacteria it's a zoo - about 24,000. People think it's
waste, but it's not. It's a major defence system."
Where people had longterm, otherwise incurable bowel conditions, they were
generally happy to accept a stool donation, usually from a spouse or close
family member, said Dr Borody.
"The procedure requires fresh stool, homogenised in a blender in an anaerobic
environment, covered so that it doesn't die."
The recipient has an enema in order to be able to receive the fresh stool, which
is introduced via a colonoscope.
