Shocking is a process where the organic materials (urine, sweat, sun tan oils, skin oils, skin flakes) are oxidized to ash, which the filter than removes. Normally with chlorine it is done by adding about 10X the normal chlorine to "burn" the stuff out. You can also shock with h2o2. If you have an ozonater then it should shock the water continuously as it circulates, thus avoiding the weekly shocker.
