Dear Kevin,
While not pundits, we have, for a number of
years, researched and followed this issue with much interest. There is
neither time...nor bandwidth....on this forum , to pursue a reliable and
rational explanation-in-depth to your observation.
However, if one is, truly, interested in
determining whether or not a genuine "threat" exists, I suggest they do some
direct investigation of the entire secenario surrounding the issue. The most
powerful challenge seems to revolve around the question of whether the
production of GMO organisms---under the present development
methodologies....is or is not a COLLATERAL threat to other biological
systems----and if so, how pronounced is such a threat? We would caution that
in cases threatening rapid and wide-spread dissemination of MODIFIED GENES,
especially ones capable of inflicting irreversible changes.....many, presently
unforseen consequences are likely to follow----some, possibly, of catastrophic
impact. The greatest threat to the world's biological systems.....stemming
from any "headlong" rush into precipitating a distribution of
"super-competing" species, may be the simple fact that humankind may be
incapable of putting Pandora back-into-the-box.
It is troubling to see the majority of public address
concentrating upon the immediate concerns for , primarily, the human food
supply. Our research indicates the possiblity of a much greater threat to
ancillary species and even entire eco-systems.....in cases of untoward
escapes......than presently admitted by the leading-edge advocates of this
technology.
I do not wish to instigate an adversarial
posture....toward anyone----but rather to encourage reasonable reflection on
an issue ( which I believe) is FAR greater in potential consequence than the
elements of present contention.
The great tragedy seems to be that events are being
accelerated, primarily, based upon immediate access to economic gains of the
highest order........regrettably with few safeguards for protecting the
Biosphere.
                                                        Sincerely, Brooks
Bradley.
