fedtoledo asks:
> Should I take this to the off topic list?

Hi Gang,

Let me try to describe what I'm asking for...

The most common kind of OT thread is somebody's question, like:

    "Will CS work for goiter?"

Normal replies will include some about CS, and some about other
things.

Some of those other things will spawn OT threads that only require a
few messages before they naturally exhaust themselves.

What is "a few?" Probably anything less than ten or so...

If one or two 'get legs' and need more time, then anyone on the thread
may *suggest* the OT list and cross-post it there. It'll take at least
another day for everybody else that's interested to catch up and
follow.

If nobody else does it, then I may post a message asking them to end or
move the thread. It will usually take a day or two for me to do that,
unless the thread is really exploding.

To be honest, all of that is *NOT* necessary when the list is ticking
along with just a dozen messages per day! The real complaints start
when we're getting 30 - 50 or more messages per day and the majority
are OT. That is what the OT list really exists for.

Other really OT threads that come up need to end or move within a day
or two and a few posts. This allows a reasonable amount of benign chit
chat and banter and keeps things friendly without overwhelming the
list. During high volume times, less is good.

So let's try to relax a bit, keep the OT volume below the ON topic
volume, and try to help, support, and encourage each other. The less
said *about* the list itself, the better.

Be well,

Mike D.
